Highlights From Mike Wallace's Interview With CBS
Cares:
-- Mike Wallace on when he first realized he was
depressed: "I've had three episodes of it. But
the first time around was about 20 years ago. I decided to see
if I could begin to talk to a psychiatrist to find out what was
going on. I was recommended to a doctor here in New
York...he began to tell me what was wrong. First of all, I
had to get over the fact that I was some kind of monster to have
this depressive attitude and to be in a depression...and that
it wasn't all that unusual and lots of people had
it."
-- Wallace on contemplating suicide: "Tell me the
depressive who hasn't or the person who suffering from
depression...I thought about it quite, quite seriously. The
pain of depression, like we're talking about, becomes so
intense, and I mean as a physical pain, you just hate to
contemplate the fact that it's not going away for awhile.
I want out of this."
-- Wallace on his symptoms of depression: "You
begin to doubt yourself...when depression hit me, I
couldn't sleep, started taking sleeping pills, began to
lose weight. I began to lose self- confidence and I (thought)
'What are you some kind of wimp and you can't take
care of that.'"
