"There's no better way to inspire a young person
than to become a part of their life through a mentoring
program," says U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ). Beginning
the weekend of February 18, CBS RADIO in association with
CBS Cares, the multimedia public service initiative created by
the CBS Television Network, will broadcast an exclusive interview
with the Senator on the importance of mentoring.
The half-hour special will be featured on www.CBSRADIO.com and select
stations across the country (check local listings). This is the
second installment of an on-going series presented by the two CBS
Corporation divisions designed to bring awareness to a number of
different causes impacting the lives of viewers and listeners.
In October 2005, the special highlighted depression which
included an interview with 60 Minutes correspondent Mike
Wallace.
Hosted by CBS News' Charles Osgood, Senator McCain
discusses his new book With Character Is Destiny, National
Mentoring Month, how having had a mentor as a child helped him
cope with years of captivity as a prisoner of the North
Vietnamese and the impact volunteer mentors have on today's
youth. Additionally, the special includes a discussion with one
of the architects of the growth of mentoring in the U.S., Dr. Jay
A. Winsten, Head of the Harvard Mentoring Project and the Frank
Stanton Director of the Center for Health Communication, Harvard
School of Public Health.
