It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of CBS Radio’s greatest ambassadors, Roy Shapiro. For 20 years, Roy served as the Vice President/General Manager of KYW Newsradio in Philadelphia, but to the many people that he touched, he was so much more.

Roy joined Group W/Westinghouse Broadcasting in 1962, only a few years removed from the City College of New York. During his 42 years with our company, he served in many capacities including Vice President/General Manager of Group W Radio Sales and Vice President of Strategic Planning and Research in New York. He was a part of the pioneering management team that in 1965 created the all- news radio format, regarded then as an industry breakthrough. Yet he is best known as the passionate, brilliant, inspirational leader of KYW, one of the nation’s most successful and respected radio stations.

Bigger than life, his voice was recognized by millions of people through his frequent editorials on the radio station.  He served as a mentor and friend to generations of broadcasters, business leaders and politicians all over the Delaware Valley and throughout the United States. Roy retired from his post as KYW Newsradio’s General Manager in 2003, but continued to consult for CBS Radio up to the time of his death.

Dan Mason, President and CEO of CBS Radio, said “Roy was the backbone of KYW Radio for so many years and continued to make valuable contributions to CBS Radio through his wealth of knowledge in audience measurement research.  All of us at CBS Radio will miss him - not only as our colleague but as our loyal friend.”

EVP, Operations, CBS Radio, Scott Herman added “Roy was an incredible person and one of the brightest and smartest minds the Broadcasting industry has ever seen.  His legacy will live on through those of us lucky enough to be mentored by him and those of us blessed to be able to call him a friend”.

“Roy was not only a great boss, he was a father figure to many of us,” said Marc Rayfield, Senior Vice President/Market Manager for CBS Radio Philadelphia. “He made everyone around him a better broadcaster and a better person. His presence in our daily lives will be sorely missed, but his spirit will live on forever.”
